This is ironic because that last part "you wouldn’t think he’d rush to the defense of a criminal cabal with a long track record of preying on innocent, idealistic youth."

this is exactly what I've seen in the 8 years Randy Shaws Tenderloin Housing Clinic has taken over my building.

You get young, idealistic, college recruits here to help the homeless. I've seen this so many times. They come in here and they really want to help the poor people of Shaw's THC but because of Shaws own policies, after a couple of years they all get this lost far away look in their eyes, as if they've completely given up hope

Chew em up and spit em out

you can see why here

Herrera can go stand on a soapbox at 16th and Mission spouting all the free speech he can muster. When he's on the air representing his employer, though, he might want to check the rules of his place of employment. It's not so easy being a celebrity big mouth these days.

When I was an NCOC student in the mid-90s, the financial aid office didn't even know that federal Pell grants had been raised. They were so out of touch. I had a friend who worked at another school fax them the new Pell grant chart. Offices would be open when the workers (many of whom were Gabel's chums and lived in Santa Rosa with him) felt like opening them; the arrogance and paternalism in all aspects of administration were really out of hand. Back then, WASC issued an accreditation report in which NCOC admins called students "highly intelligent misfits" and other nice things. NCOC has a long history of screwing its teachers and students. I'm glad Martin Hamilton is getting well deserved bad press finally. But it's too bad that Gabel and his cult didn't do right by students and get accreditation in hand last summer. Cripes! I earned my degree in 1998. I'm sorry for you folks who were midway through your careers there. A lawsuit really should be considered. Alumns might want to pay attention to this--who has our data and will issue our transcripts? I'm sorry as well to see what was actually a really neat program and a SF institution finally crumble.

Well yes, we could fund it in other ways, but it would take some coordination as well as promotion by credible, well-known people. I'm personally not interested in doing it as a voluntary activity.

Good idea, Jay! We could do a speakers bureau without, or before, getting a court settlement, thanks to the Internetz.

Frantic and frequent revivals may be rapturously satisfying alternatives to cleaning house, but until the New Age con men are removed from the board of trustees, I wouldn't expect any miracles.
